Resin Cleaning Information

Even if your Quarry Critters, Boyds Bearstones, and other resin figurines are displayed in a closed cabinet, they likely will accumulate light dust after a while. When it comes time to clean them, The Teddy Baron offers the following suggestions:

First and foremost: use your best judgment. If the figurine is very old, exceptionally delicate, or has been repaired, cleaning its surface may not be worth the risk of potential damage.

If you do decide to clean the item, hold the figure at its base or set it on a clean, sturdy work surface. You might want to wear clean cotton gloves and/or cover the work surface with a clean cotton towel.

  1. Use short bursts of compressed air. Cans of compressed air are available in the computer accessory sections of most office supply and discount stores. Try to spray the air at an angle to the sculpture to avoid simply blowing the dust deeper.

  2. A household hair dryer set on "Low" also works well. Again, try to blow the air at an angle to the figurine to avoid pushing the dust deeper.

  3. Lightly whisk the figure with a soft makeup brush, a small, soft paintbrush, or a feather duster. Use extra care when cleaning figurines such as Boyds Bearstones as their fur is quite detailed and the resin tips become more brittle as the stones age.

  4. Gently vacuum the figurine's surface with a soft-bristled computer vacuum.

  5. Dampen a cotton swab with lukewarm water and gently dab the surface. In tight areas, wrap a bit of cotton around the tip of a toothpick.

  6. If all of the above have failed to clean the surface, consider a mild soap mixed with lukewarm water or rubbing alcohol. Dampen a cotton swab with the liquid and gently dab the surface. We recommend you test this method on the back or the underside of the figure first to test for colorfastness.
