Effanbee
When they decided to start a New Jersey doll company in 1910, Bernard Fleischaker and Hugo Baum knew they were putting their names and reputations on the line so "F & B" became "Effanbee." Although the company began with molded dolls, they later added distinctive mohair bear lines such as the "Oh Josh! The Urban Bear" series.
According to a Bear Essentials Certificate of Authenticity, "The Effanbee mission has always been to preserve the heritage of the past and to pass this heritage on from generation to generation. Hand-crafted from the finest German Mohair with the traditional Effanbee dedication to quality, these bears reflect the almost 100 years evolution of the bear-makers' art."
When the "bee" of Effanbee died in 1940, the "eff" moved to California but the company remained in the hands of other family members. After financial difficulties in 1946, the company was sold to Noma Electric in 1947. Family members and employees got together and bought the company back in 1950, but unfortunately the company recently went out of business.
