The Boyds Collection, Ltd.
The Boyds Collection Limited began in 1979 as an antique shop in the Boyds, Maryland, home of G.M. Lowenthal and Justina Unger. The couple soon expanded its offerings to include high-quality antique reproductions such as duck decoys and a group of imported wool bears.
The company quickly outgrew the couple's home and relocated to an 1880's schoolhouse down the road. In 1987, the Boyds Collection moved to the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, area, and in 2002 opened its flagship store and museum, Boyds Bear Country.
The distinctive Boyds Bears of today began in 1984 when Gary designed a 12-inch, fully jointed wool bear named "Matthew." Matthew was the first success in what is now a vast assortment of "Bears and Hares... You Can Trust!"TM
